Wake Up America!

by Tim Couch

I see it happening already. The election is over. The dust has begun to settle. And, the people of America are getting sleepy.

It seems the growing consensus of late is that the work is all done. The water has all been carried and now it’s up to our newly elected President to make it all better.

I hear person after person in interviews and on the street saying “President Obama” is going to fix things; it’s all going to be okay now; now that we’ve elected Obama everything is going to be fine.

President-elect Obama may very well be all that you people think he is. I pray to God that he is. But, he is still a politician and he is one among thousands. He may be honorable; he may be good; and he may have the best of intentions and the best interests of the people at heart, but he is still just one man. Regardless of what he wants to accomplish he can do none of it without the requisite votes of Congress. If he doesn’t march appropriately leading with the left foot our practically Democratically controlled Congress will simply shut him down. They’ve done it before and some who are in Congress now were there when they did it to President Clinton. They know exactly how this game is played. President-elect Obama can want to do good all day long, but without the support of Congress he’s just a fancy hood ornament.

Fortunately, we the people are not so restricted. We possess the real power in this Country. We have the ability to dictate policy. We have the strength that comes in numbers. We have the influence to bring about the real change that we all want.

Unfortunately, we do not have the will or the organization it takes to actually make things happen. We would rather sleep and let our Government dictate our lives to us. We go to the polls every other year or every four years, and we consider our job done. We’ve elected our chosen candidates; now let them take care of things. It doesn’t work that way. It hasn’t worked that way. It will not work that way.

Now, more than any time in our history, it is imperative that we remain vigilant, that we continue to monitor our elected representatives to make sure they are adhering to the will of the people. Now, more than any other time, the power of bureaucracy threatens to overwhelm the power of the people. Now, more than any other, is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their Country.

Do not go back to sleep. Do not become complacent. Our future as a Nation depends on it. Our future as a people depends on it. The future of our children and grandchildren depend upon it.

Please, America, wake up!
